 Gifted Services
in
Conroe ISD

TEXAS ADMINISTRATIVE CODE, Title 19, Part II, Chapter 89. Adaptations for Special Populations, Subchapter A. Gifted/Talented Education, §89.3 Student Services states that school districts shall provide an array of learning opportunities for gifted/talented students in kindergarten through Grade 12 and shall inform parents of the opportunities.

Options must include:
1.
instructional and organizational patterns that enable identified students to work together as a group, to work with other students, and to work independently;
2.
a continuum of learning experiences that leads to the development of advanced-level products and performances;
3.
in-school and, when possible, out-of-school options relevant to the student's area of strength that
are available during the entire school year; and
4.
opportunities to accelerate in areas of strength.

Independent Study

Our state laws require that we provide gifted students an opportunity to work independently.

Each identified gifted student is required to be involved in independent study.  This study may or may not occur in the classroom.  The student may spend only a brief time in the study or spend an entire semester exploring an area of strength and interest.

Your child’s teacher is part of a team including other campus and/or district staff  who may serve as resources and guides through this experience.

Advanced Level Products

Our state laws require that we provide a continuum of learning experiences that leads to the development of advanced-level products and performances.  We currently have in place GT Process Skills K-12 that are based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).  When these process skills have been mastered, products should be at an advanced level.

An advanced level product is a product that is authentic within the field of study.  It provides insight and reflects a valid generalization and/or relationship that is two or more years beyond the student’s expected level of development.

Out-of-School Experiences

We provide Destination Imagination as one of our out-of-school experience options district-wide.  This is a creative problem solving organization that cuts across all content area lines.  This program emphasizes the TEKS and our district’s GT Process Skills.

Acceleration

Opportunities to accelerate in areas of strength can be found in every GT classroom from simple strategies of curriculum compacting to independent study.  As stated in the Texas State Plan for the Gifted, curriculum and instruction must meet the needs of gifted students by modifying the depth, complexity, and pacing of the general school program.  Modifications for the gifted are made in CISD when students demonstrate an "A" level of mastery in the general school curriculum.  This could mean modification within a lesson, outside of the lesson, or modification within an entire unit of study.  When a gifted student does not show an "A" level of mastery in the on-level lesson, modifications using depth or complexity are not appropriate until mastery has been obtained.
